Every. Day. Ride #22 with Kath Goodey

Tell us a little about yourself?

My name’s Kath Goodey and I’m from North Wales. I grew up in a super- outdoorsy family and me and my sisters were skiing, climbing, hiking and playing in boats and kayaks as soon as we were big enough. I’ve taught in international schools in many countries around the world but now I live back in Eryri, near Betws y Coed with my partner Rob and Nico the cat.

I run my mountain bike business RideHigh MTB and am passionately involved with MTB trail and access advocacy. I’m Chair of Trail Collective North Wales and am one of the directors of UK MTB Trail Alliance. I also sit on the steering group for the UK Trail Project where I represent Beicio Cymru.

How and when did you get into riding?

I got into MTB back in the mid 1990s at first, as something to do when it was too wet to rock climb and as a fun way of staying fit for alpine climbing and as a practical way of doing shopping and getting to work when I was too poor to have a car! It became the number one obsession in my life in around 2009.

What are the best and worst things about riding?

Best thing about riding is undoubtedly being in a group of close friends, most likely all women, and having a flipping great laugh, while all challenging ourselves on our local steep, tech trails. Ending up at our fave café for great coffee and cake or pizza and beer!

Worst thing is riding in winter and having freezing cold feet and the agony of hot aches when they come back to life. Closely followed by washing bikes after winter rides!

Tell us about your most memorable ride to date?

Most memorable ride to date would have to be Top of the World to Creekside down the EWS trails at Whistler. Mind blowingly good! Close second is Heart Break Ridge up in Ballater, Aberdeenshire. Am I allowed two?!!

What’s the best piece of riding advice you’ve ever been given?

Best piece of riding advice? Learn to love your front brake.

What do you bring with you on every ride?

I always take a small first aid kit after being out with a group of mates and having a stick somehow wedge itself through my bike frame and into my calf opening up in a huge gash. None of us had a first aid kit with us. Luckily, one of the girls found an ancient dressing in the down tube stash box of her bike and this saved the day. Lesson well and truly learnt!

How do you keep your bikes secure at home and on the go? Share your best tips to help others keep their bikes safe.

Bikes are kept secure at home by chaining through heavy duty floor anchors in locked garage. Same in van. Chain passed through floor anchor.

Top tip: Remember to take keys for bike padlocks with you when you go on holiday. Hilarious story of trying to find steel fabricator in Aosta Valley, Italy to cut through bomb proof bike locks and chains because keys had been left on kitchen table at home!

When someone asks what kit you recommend, you say?

Ride clothing = Rapha and Dharco. Waterproofs = 7Mesh. Backpack and bumbag = Evoc. Helmet and protection = Fox and TLD. Glasses and goggles = Smith.
Random best bit of kit = Katadyn BeFree water filter, perfect for topping up from streams and pools when you only carry a bottle on your bike!

What’s on your riding bucket list?

Riding bucket list? Definitely Nelson, NZ and Sedona, US as well as lots more in Canada. Better get doing the lottery!
