From everyday commuter bicycles and premium e-bikes to scooters and motorcycles, thieves are becoming increasingly organised, targeting vehicles in urban centres, residential areas, and busy transport locations.
Using insights from the LITELOK Theft Intelligence Dashboard, we’ve analysed theft trends to identify the five US cities where bike theft is most prevalent. Our research combines attempted theft reports submitted by LITELOK customers, official crime data, and community insights to provide a clearer understanding of bike theft patterns and the locations most frequently targeted.
Alongside the data, we’ve highlighted real customer success stories from these theft hotspot areas, showcasing how riders have protected their vehicles and prevented theft.

Some of these cities may already be recognised as major bike theft hotspots. Below, we explore each location in more detail, examining the factors that make them higher-risk areas and sharing real success stories from riders whose bikes were protected with LITELOK.
New York
Of course, the Big Apple takes the top spot, ranking as the US city with the highest levels of bike theft.
This was one of the reasons we travelled to the city to host an event with Rapha New York, where we demonstrated the strength and security of our locks alongside comparisons with the locks used by attending riders.

In 2013, 529 Garage was launched with the mission of tackling bike theft and making cycling safer. Much like LITELOK’s own founder, who was driven to create a better security solution after experiencing repeated bike theft, 529 Garage’s founder was inspired to take action after having a bike stolen themselves.
The initiative has since grown into a digital bicycle registration and recovery platform, helping riders protect their bikes, report thefts, and improve the chances of recovery.

New York City’s position as a major bike theft hotspot comes down to a combination of scale, density, and opportunity. With one of the largest cycling communities in the US, thousands of bikes are parked across streets, subway stations, and residential areas every day. The city’s high population density, limited secure storage options, and growing popularity of high-value e-bikes make it an attractive target for thieves.
As more New Yorkers turn to riding a bike, scooter, or motorcycle for commuting, deliveries, and everyday transport, protecting bikes in public spaces has become increasingly important. The busy streets and constant flow of riders create the perfect environment for thieves looking to target vulnerable bikes.
A LITELOK customer shared their success story after securing their bike in New York’s Financial District. Here’s a snippet of what Arizona had to say:
“The bike was locked to a bike rack outside of the World Trade Center on Fulton and Church St in New York City. It is an incredibly public location with a number of bike racks right outside of Fulton Street subway transit centre.”

Los Angeles
Los Angeles ranks second in the US for reported levels of bike theft. However for motorcycle theft, Los Angeles comes in at first place.
Los Angeles’ position as a major bike theft hotspot is closely linked to the city’s growing two-wheeled transport culture. High-end bikes, electric models, and motorcycle components can command high resale values, making them attractive targets for thieves.
A key driver of theft in the city is the demand for easily resold parts. Batteries, wheels, motors, and other specialist components can often be removed and sold separately, creating a profitable market for stolen goods. As more riders invest in premium two-wheeled vehicles, thieves are increasingly targeting these valuable parts, adding to the challenges faced by cyclists and riders across Los Angeles.
This is where a layered approach to security becomes essential. If thieves are targeting individual components of your ride, it’s important to consider additional precautions, such as removing your e-bike battery where possible and using multiple security devices to protect your vehicle and its valuable parts.

A Los Angeles Times report, citing LAPD data, found that bike thefts in downtown LA had risen by more than 57%, with bicycles most commonly stolen between noon and 6 p.m. The problem extends beyond bicycles: Los Angeles also recorded 628 motorcycle thefts in a recent reporting year, according to NICB data published by the Insurance Information Institute, ranking the city as the second-highest city for motorcycle theft in the United States, behind New York City.
San Francisco
Closely following behind LA, San Francisco comes in third for highest numbers of bike theft in the US. According to the San Francisco Police:
"Several thousands of bikes are stolen annually – in most cases without their owners ever reporting the crimes. Nearly half of the reported thefts take place downtown, including around Union Square, the Tenderloin, Civic Center, Market Street, South of Market and along the Embarcadero. Thieves steal seats, wheels or the entire bike. Many more bikes than iPhones are stolen, at a yearly cost of more than several million dollars."
We’ve heard from customers in San Francisco who have experienced attempted bike thefts. The photo above shows the damage caused during Josue’s attempted theft incident.
“Recently someone tried to melt through my lock with a blowtorch. The attempted theft occurred in San Francisco, in the early morning of November 11. I can imagine it was around 4am.”

Chicago
Bike thefts in Chicago commonly occur near restaurants, bars, boutiques, and storefronts, and residential neighbourhoods are also frequently targeted. Like most cities, with more people turning to commuting on two wheels, the more appeal for organised bike thief.
From our Theft Intelligence Dashboard, as of today 5,400 bicycles have been stolen this year in Chicago, with July being the seasonal trend reaching the highest rates of bike theft.
Bike theft in Chicago is an increasing concern for riders, many of whom depend on their bikes to travel more easily through the city’s busy streets. Cycling also supports a healthier lifestyle by helping residents stay active and improving mental wellbeing. However, the growing fear of bike theft is discouraging more people from choosing to cycle.

Portland
In Portland, bike theft remains a significant concern for cyclists, with thieves often targeting locations where large numbers of bicycles are left unattended for long periods. Schools are particularly vulnerable, as students frequently park their bikes in predictable areas with varying levels of security throughout the day.
The concentration of bicycles on school grounds makes them an attractive target for bike thieves, who may see student bikes as easier opportunities to steal and resell. Raising awareness of this trend and encouraging stronger bike security measures at schools can help reduce theft and better protect students’ bicycles.
Bike theft is a growing concern for riders across the US, with some cities experiencing significantly higher levels of reported theft than others. While this guide highlights the Top 5 cities for bike theft in the US, it is important to remember that being outside this list does not mean your city is safe from bike theft. Bike theft can happen anywhere, from busy city centres and bike racks to schools, workplaces and residential areas.
